Cyberpunk 2077 Will Be A First-Person RPG, Developers Explain Why

Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be somewhat of a departure from the CDPR formula. One of the changes that their new RPG will bring to the table is the first-person perspective. The reasons behind this, according to the developers, is that they want to up the immersion. They really want you to feel the world of Cyberpunk 2077 like you’re there.

I think it’s safe to say that CD Projekt Red have this whole role-playing game thing down to a tee with the Witcher series. However, they are going to shake things up with Cyberpunk 2077. As we’ve covered before, Cyberpunk will feature character creation, unlike The Witcher; plus, the game will be a first-person RPG, which is a first for the studio. This has left many players wondering why exactly CDPR is going for the first-person approach, especially considering that we can now customize out character. Well, according to the developers, the shortest and simplest answer is: for the immersion.

Basically, CD Projekt Red wants you to live and feel the world of Cyberpunk 2077 as viscerally as possible. And, according to quest designer Patrick Mills, the first-person perspective is the way to achieve that. He said (via Eurogamer): “In this game we wanted to put you in the shoes and in the body of the character you’re controlling, so you feel like this is your character. First-person was one way to do that.” He continues: “If nothing else, I think it’s going to be really cool when you’re walking around the city and you look up, which is something that in third-person doesn’t really feel right. To really experience that verticality you need a first-person perspective.”

Lead level designer Peter Gelencser echoed the sentiment, saying that “the first-person point of view is there so you can see things happening up close, and so you can really interact with things in a visceral manner with the game world.” So, there you have it. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of first-person RPGs. That being said, I have a feeling I’m still going to sink a lot of time into Cyberpunk 2077.
