NetherRealm Studios has launched a new trailer on the Injustice 2 YouTube channel. The purpose of the video is to show us how the Gear system in the game functions. As you’d expect, you unlock new stuff by playing the game. It can be either by winning matches and leveling up, or by completing certain in-game achievements (for augments, abilities and special moves). Once you get new gear, you can customize your loadout to get various bonuses and augment your playstyle.

The whole idea is to give the player “near-infinite” customization options for your looks and fighting style. The more you level up, the more specialized gear you’ll get. Of course, you get the most powerful effects from armor set bonuses. The more pieces of a connected armor set you use, the better bonuses you’ll get.

The Gear system sounds rife with opportunities for microtransactions. You’d expect that they’d completely tip the scales in favor of extra-paying customers. Fortunately, according to the developers, that’s not how it will work. We’ve written before about Injustice 2 Source Crystals and what they’re used for. Purchasing Gear isn’t one of the uses. It seems that the only way to obtain Gear is to play the game, as it well should be. Also, competitive play will probably forbid using Gear to keep a level playing feel.

Injustice 2 is scheduled to launch on May 16th, 2017 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as Android and iOS.
