Déraciné Announced for PSVR, Made By From Software

From Software’s first foray into VR, Déraciné, has been announced via trailer at E3 2018 for the PSVR. The name is a French adjective, which means uprooted, as in a person uprooted from their natural environment. It seems that the player will take control over a spirit that a girl in a boarding school has summoned, and they’ll have to prove their existence and form bond with students by manipulating time and the force of life.

Déraciné Announced for PSVR, Made By From Software

From Software has decided to prove to everyone that they’re capable of much more than Soulsborne games, it seems. When you think about it, they kinda painted themselves in a corner, and were in serious jeopardy of being seen as a one-trick pony. And then comes Déraciné, a new PSVR game made by them. Sony has announced the game during their slot at this year’s E3 via announcement trailer. The video leaves things very open and vague, as is standard for From Software, but it definitely does peak curiosity.

The video starts off with a strange painting of forest animals gathering around a glowing baby, almost like a nativity scene. The narration reveals that somebody is going to become (or be, rather) a fairy. That somebody is going to live in a land “where time stands still, where nobody can see what you’re up to, ever again.” The trailer then transitions to shots of an isolated boarding school and a girl that’s a student there. The mood is so melancholic; it seems that’s the one thing From Software just can’t resist. The last shot is of a billowing curtain freezing in the wind, and a wilted flower coming back to life.

The description of the video gives us a little more: “As a spirit summoned by a young girl in a secluded boarding school, the player must prove its existence and build a unique bond with the students through clever interactions.” You, as the spirit, will also be able to “manipulate the forces of life and time to change the fate of the pupils.” This sounds like an extremely interesting concept. Lastly, the name of the game, Déraciné, is an adjective describing a person that has been uprooted from their natural environment. This clearly describes the girl in the boarding school, but I wonder whether it has anything to do with the spirit you’re playing as. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, you can check out the trailer for Déraciné below.
