Into The Breach, the next game from the developers of FTL, is going to be released on February 27th. At this point, it’s only going to be released for Windows – they do intend to port it to Mac and Linux, but only after launch. They will consider Android, iOS and consoles at some point in the future, but that probably depends on how well the game does on PC.
Into The Breach is a turn based strategy in which you take control of a squad of mechs and defend the Earth from giant insects. Battles take place on miniature 8×8 boards. You start off with three basic mechs, which you upgrade between missions, choosing how to develop them based on your preferences. You also get to choose between various pilots, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
You will be outnumbered, but you will find victory through smart use of terrain. The fact that you can see what your enemy’s next move will be should also be helpful, letting you prioritize the right targets. However, you’ll have to have civilian buildings in mind, as well. The bugs are after the general populace, not you. Thankfully, the terrain itself can be used as a weapon as well – you can push the monsters into freezing cold water, smash them against mountains, or see them drown in the rising tide. Each mission will also have bonus objectives, letting you earn more rewards by making things more difficult for your heroic pilots.
Into The Breach will initially be released on Steam, GOG and Humble Store. The last one will presumably offer Steam keys as well, which means that if you buy now, you’ll get access to the Mac and Linux versions when they appear, no matter which store you choose.
