What Are Shell Points in Mortal Shell 2?
Shell points in Mortal Shell 2 are basically skill points that you can invest in a talent or ability tree that every shell has. Every shell you discover has its own set of passive skills, and Shell Points are the currency you spend to unlock them.
How to Unlock Your First Shell Skill Tree
After you discover your first shell, you need to pick up a special item called the Glimpse. You can find one inside the Widow’s Overlook beacon, which is the first beacon to the north that you’ll visit. Glimpse is usually found when cleansing beacons and defeating big bosses, so keep an eye out for it as you explore.
Once you’ve got a Glimpse, head back to Marrow Keep and talk to Zhirelle, the woman stationed there. Choose the “deepen bond” option, then press and hold A on Xbox (or X on PlayStation) to use the Glimpse item. This unlocks the first row of skills in that shell’s talent tree, meaning you can finally start investing Shell Points into upgrading your shell’s abilities.
How to Get Shell Points in Mortal Shell 2
So once your skill tree is unlocked, how do you actually get Shell Points to spend on it? That’s done by going to any beacon and choosing the level up option. Press the LB/L1 on your controller to level up your Harbinger, which is your basic form, the one displayed on the left of the menu.
To level up, you need enough Gloom, which is essentially this game’s version of souls. Gloom drops from killing enemies, so the more you fight, the faster you’ll accumulate it. When you consume Gloom to level up, you’ll acquire a Shell Point in the process. Each level up generally gives one Shell Point, though not every level seems to reward one. At level 12, for example, I only earned eight Shell Points, so don’t be surprised if the rate slows down as you climb higher.
How to Respec Shell Skill Points
Another important thing to know about Shell Points is that you can freely respec them. Go to your shell’s level up menu and press the RT/R2 on your controller, and this will reimburse all Shell Points invested in that shell for free, letting you redistribute them however you like.
This is especially useful once you unlock several shells, since you might otherwise be confused about why a new shell has no Shell Points to spend. You’ll need to reimburse points from another shell first if they’re already invested there. Pressing the right trigger will pull all the Shell Points back from any shell, and you can then invest them into the new shell’s skill tree instead.
