Pawns are one of those gameplay elements that make Dragon’s Dogma 2 the memorable experience that it is. Every Arisen (the main character in DD2) is faithfully served by their Pawns, support characters that obey their every command. Early on in the game, you will get the option to create your main Pawn. You can choose between one of four Inclinations. That is – Kindhearted, Calm, Simple, and Straightforward. The problem is that their names don’t really tell you a whole lot about how they act. So let’s break all of them down, starting with Kindhearted: “Compassionate, devoted, and dutiful. The most obedient sort of pawn. Favors a balanced approach with an emphasis on support.” Next up, Calm: “Rational, shrewd, and strategizing. A pawn characterized by caution. Favors defense and evasion, employing clever tactics to survive at all costs.”
On the other hand, the Simple Pawns love to explore: “Curious, earnest, and adventurous. A pawn with their heart on their sleeve. Enjoys exploring and gathering items, and is always up for a challenge.” And finally, Straightforward. “Candid, flippant, and impulsive. A pawn unbound by precepts. Enjoys the thrill of combat, tackling fierce foes head-on with daring assaults.” So now that we know how each of these Inclinations functions, which one is the best? Well, this depends on what sort of character your Arisen is and your own preferred playstyle.
If you want a character that is going to support you with healing, then the Kindhearted is the right pick for you. And if you are the one taking action and you need a Pawn that is going to be able to avoid dangers on their own, then you can’t go wrong with Calm. If you want to have a reliable explorer and pack mule, Simple is the way to go. And the Straightforward Pawn is for those Arisen that prefer their Pawns take initiative in combat.
