Who Came Up With the Idea to Call the Superhero Team the Avengers?

If you are only familiar with the MCU, then you probably remember Tony Stark’s famous words when talking to Loki near the end of the first Avengers movie: “There’s no throne, there is no version of this where you come out on top. Maybe your army comes and maybe it’s too much for us but it’s all on you. Because if we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure we’ll avenge it.” Because of this, you might think that he’s the obvious right answer to this question. However, as we’ll soon see, this isn’t the case. So if not Tony, then who?

  • 1. Iron Man.
  • 2. The Wasp.
  • 3. Loki.
  • 4. Nick Fury.

The correct answer here is The Wasp. The thing is, this refers to the original Avengers #1 issue from 1963. In it, The Wasp (Janet van Dyne) coins the team’s name. The original team consisted of her, The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, and Ant Man, going up against Loki. So while it is very similar to the team from the first movie, it is also different in a lot of ways. This original incarnation of the team was short-lived, however, and soon other notable characters such as Captain America and Doctor Strange joined up.
