This means that if you switch out a mega evolved pokemon, if you return it to the field again, it’ll be back to normal. In order to mega evolve a pokemon, you’ll have to pick the mega evolution before you select an attack on the given turn. The pokemon will evolve before performing the move you’ve chosen.

In order to unlock mega evolutions, you’ll have to progress through the story a fair bit. It becomes available only after you’ve unlocked the gym in Viridian City (the last one). Once you’re inside, you’ll talk to professor Oak, and he’ll give you the Key Stone. This is the item you’ll use together with mega stones in order to perform mega evolutions. He’ll also give you a couple of mega stones for free. Although there are numbers next to them in the inventory, these stones cannot be spent.

Where to find mega stones in Pokemon Let’s Go?

After professor Oak gives you the Key Stone, he’ll also give you four mega stones: Charizardite X, Charizardite Y, Blastoisinite and Venusaurite. In order to get more, you’ll have to beat the game first. Once you’ve dealt with the Elite Four, go back to the lobby of the Indigo Plateau building and go right. Talk to the guy in the pink costume, and he’ll offer to sell you more. They’re 30 thousand pokemon bucks each, and he sells the following:

  • Beedrillite
  • Pidgeotite
  • Alakazite
  • Slowbronite
  • Gengarite
  • Kangaskhanite
  • Pinsirite
  • Gyaradosite
  • Aerodactylite

Additionally, you’ll be able to get Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y after you’ve caught Mewtwo. As you exit the Cerulean Cave, your rival will tell you about another trainer that went into the cave. Go back inside and head to the spot where you fought Mewtwo. Defeat the trainer found there, and you’ll get the two stones as reward.
