How to Increase Vivarium Species Limit in Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy is as much an RPG as it is a sim game, akin to Animal Crossing. Among many activities you can do, animal lovers will surely appreciate the most the ability to tame animals and rescue them from poachers. Once you tame and capture a magical beast, you will be able to store it safely in your Vivarium. However, you start only with four Vivarium species slots. In the Forest Vivarium, you can only hold up to twelve creatures and four different species. And that will defiantly not be enough as you progress through the game. Thus, is there a way to increase the number of slots available in the Vivarium in Hogwarts Legacy? Yes, you can expand the Vivarium!

Before we continue, minor spoilers are ahead! The number of species you can hold in the Vivarium can be increased up to sixteen different species throughout the course of the game. This is achieved by unlocking three new Vivariums. Along with the default first one (the Forest Vivarium), this makes for a total of four Vivariums. These are the additional Vivariums:

How to Upgrade Your Vivarium in Hogwarts Legacy

  • Beach Vivarium – complete the “The Plight of the House-Elf” side quest, and the first Vivarium expand upgrade will automatically become available.
  • Swamp Vivarium Upgrade – After you finish The Plight of the House-Elf and the Fire and Vice main quest, the Foal of Dead side quest will unlock. Deek will teach you how to create new beasts by mating them. You will have to find a pair of Thestrals, one male and one female, and buy a Breeding Pen Spellcraft from Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade. Bring the Thestrals and the spell to Deek, and the Room of Requirement will unlock the Swamp Vivarium.
  • Grassland/Meadow Vivarium – This one is a direct continuation of the previous quest. After you get a Thestral youngling, head to Deek. He will talk about a Phoenix nest in the mountains. What’s more, he will explain that the young phoenix is endangered by poachers. Head to the mountains, find the cave with the phoenix to complete the “Phoenix Rising” side quest, and this will unlock the Grassland Vivarium.

Each of these thematic Vivariums can hold up to four species and 12 individual animals. In total, you can keep 16 different species of beasts in your Vivariums and 48 individual animals. And that’s it. That’s how you can expand your Vivarium in Hogwarts Legacy and increase the species limit. We will not go into details about all these quests, as that’s best for your to experience yourself. With that said, our guide is completed.
