Barren Temple Puzzles in Nier Replicant

The Nier Replicant Barren Temple is an area that’s basically a series of rooms with puzzles that you have to solve to save the prince from Facade, as well as a boss you have to beat. The puzzles themselves are not too difficult, but every room imposes some kind of limitation. For example, in some rooms, you can’t jump, or run, or use magic, etc. If you break any of these rules, it’ll send you back to the beginning. In our Barren Temple Puzzles in Nier Replicant guide, we’ll show you how to complete the trials, how to defeat the boss and how to come back to the temple later.

How to Complete Third Trial in Nier Replicant Barren Temple

To complete the third trial in Nier Replicant Barren Temple, you have to solve the puzzle without running, dodging, or using magic. Each room has things that you can’t do, or else it will send you to the beginning. You’ll have to be careful to always remember what the limitations are; other than that, the puzzles are easy. Here’s a list of them, just so you know what’s forbidden.

  • Leaping Rabbit – No jumping
  • Stationary Owl – No standing in place
  • Racing Wolf – No running
  • Evasive Mouse – No dodging
  • Magic-Spewing Bat – No using magic
  • Protected Turtle – Not 100% on this one, I think it means no blocking
  • Blade-Wielding Tiger – No using weapons

For the third trial specifically, just walk behind the shooting blocks, and jump onto them when you can. You can also cut them up sometimes, but don’t forget, they come back. We just circled the room by hugging the left wall, and all we had to do was jump onto one of the shooting blocks to jump over a stream of projectiles. Just don’t run, dodge, or cast a spell, and you’ll be fine.

How to Defeat Boss in Barren Temple in Nier Replicant

To defeat the boss in Nier Replicant Barren Temple, after all the puzzles, you need to shoot its cubes when they turn pinkish-red. The best way to do so is to use Dark Lance. If you keep pressing the button that Dark Lance is assigned to, it’ll let you aim. This makes hitting precisely the cube you want. Why is that important? Well, if you hit a cube that’s not glowing pink, the boss fires a whole bunch of black balls that hurt a lot. Those of you that are finding the boss too difficult can always dial down the difficulty in the options at any time.

How to Go Back to the Barren Temple

To go back to the Barren Temple in Nier Replicant, and play with the puzzles some more, you have to get a specific item – the Royal Compass. Without this thing, you’ll get the “Desert Sandstorm is Too Intense” warning. That completely bars you from going into the storm. Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to get the Royal Compass. After you return the prince to Facade, the city in the desert, you have to talk to one of the guards. They’ll give you the compass as a token of gratitude. You can read about it in more detail in our Desert Sandstorm Too Intense to Go Any Further Nier Replicant guide.
