There’s a new promotional video for Cyberpunk 2077. It’s called Deep Dive, and it covers all kinds of topics during the fifteen minutes of run time. It starts off with a mountain of lore that should feel familiar to fans of the pen and paper game, then segues into footage showing off different approaches to a mission. And yes, there’s a frame or two of Keanu Reeves. Breathtaking etc.
It opens with a scene in which V lies down into a bathtub full of ice in order to connect to the internet. And you thought dial up modem noises were hard to endure. She’s doing it to access the Voodoo Boys’ internet fortress. They’re Night City’s premier netrunning gang, a bunch of cyber-anarchists of Haitian descent. This means a bunch of “dis” instead of “this” in the subtitles.
After the intro, there’s a lengthy lecture on the history of Pacifica, one of the city’s neighborhoods. It was supposed to be a tourist spot, but at some point investors started pulling out and it was abandoned. Haitian refugees made it their home after the island nation was devastated by natural disasters, some fifteen years prior to the game’s events. They don’t like strangers and say things like “de biochip”.
But they’re willing to make an exception for the player, in return for a favor. The Animals, a roid-raging gang of human-bear hybrids, have set up shop in a deserted shopping mall in the area, and the Voodoo Boys don’t like that. They want the player to check the place out, specifically a suspicious high-tech van that’s been spotted there. The video then shows off bits of the mission from the points of view of a brute strength action-hero archetype, as well as a stealthy hacker.
