SAMURAI is going to be an in-universe rock band in Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red has brought in Swedish punk band Refused to provide the music and lyrics for SAMURAI, and, well ahead of the game’s launch, have given us the first taste of the music. Refused’s first song as SAMURAI, Chippin’ In, is now out for your listening pleasure on YouTube. It’s not exactly what I was envisioning in my head, but oh well.
Music is a huge part of the Cyberpunk universe. After all, “punk” is right there in the name. Not only that, but Rockerboys like Johnny Silverhand (aka Keanu Reeves) are absolute heroes on the streets. In the original pen and paper RPG, you can play a Rockerboy, if you want. So, it’s good to know that CD Projekt Red isn’t gonna be skimping on the music department. In fact, they’ve gotten Swedish punk band Refused to act as the fictional, in-universe bad, SAMURAI. You can check out the first song they’ve made for the game, Chippin’ In, below.
“Like us, SAMURAI is a group of rebels, albeit in a different time and place,” said Refused lead vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, adding: “Working together with CD PROJEKT RED, writing music and song lyrics for Cyberpunk’s chrome rock icon was fun, but also very different in the creative sense. It was an unexpected challenge that turned out to be right up our alley and really got us going. The songs turned out great and the game looks insane.”
Cyberpunk 2077 is coming out on April 16th, 2020. You’ll be able to play it on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (including via GOG, CD Projekt Red’s launcher / game store). The game is also currently up for pre-order, if you’re into that sort of thning and want to get in on the ride super-early.
