Crusader Kings 3 Announced for 2020, With a Trailer & Some Details

Babies are great. They’re full of potential, and with the right guidance, they can become amazing people and competent rulers. Unless they’re born with less than five of the six desirable traits, then you have to go through the trouble of putting a snake in their crib and make another one. At least, that’s what Crusader Kings 2 has taught me. From the looks of it, Crusader Kings 3 will proudly carry the infanticidal torch further. It has been announced during PDXCON, and the release is scheduled for next year.

The developers at Paradox have been toiling away on it for a few years now, but they’ve only released a cinematic trailer and a handful of screenshots. The trailer nails the feeling of the game perfectly, but it’s the screenshots that are the most interesting part of the announcement. They’re the ones showing off the revamped map, on which every holding has a presence and its own land within a county. They’re the ones introducing the new and hopefully improved UI, which should make it easier for newcomers to get to grips with the game without spending four hours learning where to find which information.

They also give us a glimpse of the new 3D portraits, and a proper RPG character screen with perks, traits and skills. It seems like CK3 is going to place a lot of emphasis on carefully raising your hairs to become who you want them (the next you) to be. The biggest question now is how exactly do they plan for it to compete with a game that has been improved upon for seven years. Obviously, it’s not going to contain all the features of CK2, but the “most highly praised or useful” ones will be making a comeback. Building it from scratch has allowed the devs to get around much of the limitations the previous game had, which will probably result in a richer experience.

Either way, they’ve promised more info in the coming months, so it’s probably best to keep your ears to the ground (yes, both of them) and await more news before jumping to conclusions.
