Which Starter Pokemon to Choose & Why in Pokemon Sword & Shield – What to Pick?

Which Starter Pokemon you choose in Pokemon Sword & Shield is entirely up to you. For all intents and purposes, it will make no particular difference what starting Pokemon you pick at the beginning of the game. You’ll constantly be swapping Pokemon in and out of your Party, to the point where you can almost completely safely stop using your starting friend at all. Also, it seems like the starter Pokemon stay purely the Pokemon type they begin as, so there’s nothing to strategize about there.

So, yeah; Scorbunny will stay pure Fire type, Sobble will stay pure Water, and Grookey will stay pure Grass across all their evolutions. That said, there might be slight differences in their stats. For example, Grookey’s evolution Rillaboom tends to lean more into HP and Attack. Cinderace, Scorbunny’s evolution, is more about Attack and Speed. Lastly, Inteleon, aka evolved Sobble, seems to rock Sp. Attack and Speed. But, again, these differences ultimately won’t really matter, especially as you make your way through the game and unlock other creatures to use in battle.

My ultimate advice to you, my friends, is this: pick whichever starter Pokemon feels right to you. You want the cute little monkey? Go for it. The adorable bunny? By all means. Whatever the heck Sobble is? Be my guest. As for me, all I want from life is a Yamper.
