According to Naughty Dog, The Last of Us Part 2 is not going to feature any multiplayer mode. This is because the single player and the evolution of Factions outgrew each other. The single player is extremely ambitious on its own. Then, the vision of the new Faction mode became more than just an extra mode. So, whatever the Factions mode was supposed to be will live on in some other iteration in the future.
One of the many aspects of the first Last of Us that attracted people to the game was the Factions online multiplayer mode. True, it’s not something that people immediately think of when somebody brings the game up, but players did enjoy it. So, naturally, there have been questions about whether The Last of Us 2 is gonna have a multiplayer mode, too. Well, Naughty Dog have answered the question in a recent tweet. The answer, sadly, is no.
Long story short, both the single player campaign and the evolution of Factions became too ambitious to cohabitate in the same game. To quote the tweet: “As we’ve stated, the single-player campaign is far and away the most ambitious project Naughty Dog has ever undertaken. Likewise, as development began on the evolution of our Factions mode from The Last of Us, the vision of the team grew beyond an additional mode that could be included with our enormous single-player campaign. Wanting to support both visions, we made the difficult choice that The Las of Us: Part 2 would not include an online mode.”
Now, that’s not to say that all that work will go to waste. As the tweet puts it: “However, you will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us: Part 2. When and where it will be realized is still to be determined.” So, there you have it, folks. Naughty Dog are cooking something else up, but we’ll have to be patient about it. As for The Last of Us Part 2, it’s coming out on February 21st, 2020.
