Valheim Beehives, Happy Bees & Honey Guide

Beehives in Valheim are structures that you can build and get honey from, as long as you keep the bees happy. However, there are some problems that you might bump into here. Like, for example, how to build beehives, and, once you do, how to make bees happy. When you have that out of the way, you need to know how to collect honey in Valheim. The first two points are definitely the more difficult of the potential issues, but we’ll be covering all these matters in our Valheim Beehives, Happy Bees & Honey Guide.

How to Build Beehives in Valheim

To build beehives in Valheim, you first need to obtain at least one Queen Bee. In order to get one of those, you need to look for beehives around abandoned houses in the Meadows biome. Once you find one, shoot it with arrows (ideally Fire Arrows) until it is destroyed, then go check whether you got a Queen Bee. You should do this whenever you come across an abandoned beehive, because honey is very useful, as we’ll explain further below.

Aside from the Queen Bee, you’ll also need ten Wood and a nearby Workbench to craft your own beehive. Build them about one meter or more from the ground, and leave about two meters of space between them (we’ll explain why in a bit). You can also get around this by building them close, but at different heights. Also, we recommend putting them at least three tiles away from the from your perimeter fence. Otherwise, the trolls that lay siege on your base will wreck your beehives with their AoE attacks. Granted, this pisses the bees off and they can attack your enemies, but the cons really outweigh the pros here.

How to Make Bees Happy

To make bees happy in Valheim, you have to give the beehives enough space away from each other and other structure in your base. As we’ve stated above, just give them about two meters of space or so, or at least put them at different elevations. Ideally, you’ll keep them away from other buildings by making a specially designated area for your honey farm. You might need to experiment a bit, but you’ll get it. You can mimic our placement from the screenshot above, it works like a dream. And remember to keep them away from the perimeter fence, lest the trolls leave you honeyless.

Valheim How to Collect Honey

To collect Honey in Valheim, all you have to do is approach your beehive and extract it. That’s all there is to it. As far as we can tell, the bees produce one to two units of Honey a day, as long as they’re happy. So, you can collect every two days or so. There really is no special wisdom to it.

Now, you might be wondering, why do you need honey in the first place, if it’s that much work? Well, honey is one of the best foods you can have in the game, easily rivaling the likes of carrot soup. More importantly, honey is the main ingredient of the different meads that you can craft, which function as potions in Valheim. For more info on all that, check out our Valheim Fermenter guide.
