Valheim Workbench Upgrade to Level 4, 5, 6

Workbench upgrades in Valheim allow you to improve your workbench, which lets you craft higher-level tools, weapons and other gear and items. So, it’s necessary to figure out how to upgrade the workbench as soon as possible. The game will let you know about all this, but you might still get stuck, since nothing here is that simple. In our Valheim Workbench Upgrade to Level 4, 5, 6 guide, we’ll show you how to upgrade workbenches, how to build a workbench, and how to get materials back when removing upgrades.

How to Upgrade Workbench in Valheim

To upgrade your workbench in Valheim, you need to build specific structures next to it; specifically, you need to make a Chopping Block, a Tanning Rack, an Adze, and a Tool Shelf. All of these upgrades will unlock gradually as you uncover new materials and craft new items. Here’s what you need for each workbench level. By the way, you get a Level 1 workbench automatically when you build it. Again, everything in the list below needs to be put next to the workbench you want to upgrade.

  • Chopping Block – Workbench Level 2: 10 Wood, 10 Flint (unlocks after you first discover Flint)
  • Tanning Rack – Workbench Level 3: 10 Wood, 15 Flint, 20 Leather Scraps, 5 Deer Hide
  • Adze – Workbench Level 4: 10 Fine Wood, 3 Bronze (requires a Forge)
  • Tool Shelf – Workbench Level 5: 10 Fine Wood, 4 Iron, 4 Obsidian (requires a Forge)

Now, somewhat confusingly, there are certain items, like the Troll Set, that seem to require you upgrade the Valheim Workbench to Level 6. However, that doesn’t seem to be possible at the time of writing, and we’re not sure why. Maybe it’s a part of a future update, or some kind of developer mistake. Whatever the case may be, there isn’t any way to get a Level 6 Workbench just yet. If we’re wrong, please, let us know in the comments.

Do You Lose Materials When Removing Valheim Workbench Upgrades

No, you don’t lose materials when removing Valheim workbench upgrades. There are two prerequisites for that. The first one is that the component you’re removing needs to be fully repaired. If it’s not at 100%, you will lose some materials upon removal. The second prerequisite is that you have to have placed it. This only pops up if you’re playing in co-op. If somebody else places the upgrade, only they can receive the materials back. If you disassemble the thing, all the materials will be gone. Other than that, you should be fine; just dismantle the thing using the Hammer tool, and you should be fine. Unless some kind of bug happens, in which case, I am so sorry.

How to Build Valheim Workbench

To build your workbench in Valheim, all you need is ten Wood and a Hammer. By that I mean, the Hammer that you use to craft things, not a weapon. For that, you need three Wood and two Stone. Take the Hammer out, right-click, go into the Crafting tab, select Workbench, and left-click to place it. Mind you, the workbench can’t be in the open; you need at least a roof and a two or three walls to protect it from the elements in order for it to work. Just remember to leave enough room in there for your Valheim Workbench upgrades.
