Grand Theft Auto V is back at Number 1 in UK sales charts, taking first place from Horizon Zero Dawn. There could be two reasons for the rise in sales. The first one is that Rockstar Games announced a new update for GTA Online called Gunrunning. The other is the controversy around Take-Two cracking down on the OpenIV mod which was followed by a huge backlash from the community.
Four years after its release, GTA V has returned to the top spot in the UK Sales Charts. Last week’s Number One, Horizon Zero Dawn, has fallen to eighth place. Arms, which was in Number 2, is now in seventh place. Dirt 4, on the other hand, has climbed to second place, which makes sense considering it’s been on sale for weeks now. Other games on the top-ten list include FIFA 17, Mario Kart Deluxe 8, Tekken 7, Overwatch, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and others.
There’s two ways to explain the significant spike in sales of GTA V. First off, Rockstar revealed a the new Gunrunning update for GTA Online. The second important aspect is the amount of press that GTA V had been getting lately, all because Take-Two slammed OpenIV with a cease-and-desist. The community backlash has been pretty intense, with fans bombing the Steam score in droves. In the meantime, Rockstar has intervened and managed to convince Take-Two to, well, cease and desist, but the community will likely not forget this soon. On the bright side, the game did get a lot of press because of the whole situation.
