Konami have released the launch trailer for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. The final video tugs on the heart strings of fans, giving us a tour through the history of the series before we jump into a Kojima-made MGS for the last time.

The song in the trailer is performed by Stefanie Joosten, the actress whose physical likeness Quiet is based on.

So far, so meta. Directed and edited by Kojima himself, the video leads us through the most memorable scenes in the series’ seventeen years of history. There’s also a scene where Big Boss turns into Skullface, which makes all the sense in the world and no sense at all, at the same time. Finally, the trailer ends with the Metal Gear in action. Pretty bad-ass.

MGSV: The Phantom Pain is going to launch on September 1st, on PC and current and last gen consoles. The online component is due later this year for consoles and January for PC.
