Wild West Online is behind those RDR2 lookalike screenshots

There was quite a furor raised yesterday when some pictures from a game about Wild West showed up. It was Red Dead Redemption 2, it must be! Turns out it wasn’t, and there was a gang of guys actively working on something similar, but different.

This is the leaked image that launched a thousand comments.

It was actually a picture from Wild West Online, a dream come true for some people, as it is, in fact, an MMO on PC that will be set in Wild West. The developers are getting ready for a Kicstarter at the end of the month, however, the game will launch regardless, as the team is getting the core ready and the Kickstarter is just a way to get some extra funding to create more features.

Steven Bugaj, the creative voice of the company, DJ2, says that they are, just like many, tired of waiting for a proper RDR experience on PC and they were not getting it, so they took matters, as it were, in their own hands. “We wanted to make this big, open Wild West world with a bit of a twist that, like the best MMOs, is a place where people can really live in”, Stephen says.

From what can be gathered, the team has a lot of things planned out. The players can be many things, gold miners, farmers, gatherers, but also bandits and lawmen. However, the resources for everything will be coming from the players themselves, creating a player-driven economy. The crafting system should be in place as well.

Probably the biggest problem that the game will face is the actual release of Red Dead Redemption 2, because both seem to be scheduled for this fall. It will be a tough nut to crack, if Rockstar decides to launch on all platforms at the same time. Still, being PC exclusive and an MMO at the core should give it a different flavor.

We will keep an eye out on Wild West Online, as it has potential to shake things up a bit.
