Elden Ring provides you with a lot of options on how you want to handle combat. The usual trinity of melee, ranged, and magic are all there, and you are free to tailor your play style to how you choose. But besides these core options, you also have other abilities that you can use. One of these is Spirit Ashes. Using them allows you to summon a spirit ally. This can be extremely useful in combat, especially against bosses, since these summons can divert their attention (and damage dealing) away from you. Of course, if you are relying on summoning, you will want to upgrade Ashes in Elden Ring, and we are here to explain how you can do this.
How to Upgrade Ashes Elden Ring
In order to upgrade your Spirit Summoning abilities, you will first need to complete a long and involved quest chain involving Roderika. We’ve already written about this in our in-depth Roderika guide, so we will provide the short version of this questline here. To start, you will need to find Roderika. She is located at the Stormhill Shack. Speak with her, and she will point you in the direction of Stormveil Castle.
Once you get there, you will encounter a room with the Grafted Scion boss. There’s no need to fight it. Go to the room to the right instead. Here, you will see a Troll carcass suspended above a pile of corpses. In this pile of corpses, you will find the Chrysalids’ Memento. Take this back to Roderika. She will then move to the Roundtable Hall. Go there and speak with her. After that, speak with Smithing Master Hewg. You will get a dialogue option to discuss Roderika. Do so and go back to Roderika. Speak with her about the conversation you just had with Hewg. Return to the blacksmith. Select the “Would you watch over Roderika?” dialogue, and after that “It’s what she wants.” Leave Roundtable Hall. The next time you return to this location, Roderika will now be next to Hewg.
She is now a Spirit Tuner, and will offer her services to you. This is how you will be able to upgrade your Spirit summoning Ashes. To do this, you will need to have Runes, and Grave Gloveworts. These flowers can be found in several locations, and you should try to collect as many of them as you can, since this will make your summons much more powerful.
Very early in your exploration of Elden Ring world you will find out that you need to prepare your character for different tasks. You'll need to learn how to use Ashes of War, how to two-hand weapons, or use magic spells during the course of your adventures. Many secrets are also waiting for you, such as, a hostile NPC Sellen that doesn't let you see her shop, an invisible man in a bush, or a huge turtle with a bell that lets you duplicate some very important items.
