How to increase settlement happiness

Here’s how to ensure your villagers are enjoying a nice life:
  • Watch your resources – You need 1 food, water and bed for every settler. If something changes color in the resource bar, you need more of it.
  • Strengthen your defense – The minimum defense value you should aim for is equal to the sum of your water and food reserves.
  • Decorate – Put rugs, paintings and other decorative items to increase the pleasantness of the homes.
  • Invest in leisure – Buy TVs and radios for every house.
  • Build shops – Some shops increase happiness: restaurant, clothing store, clinic and the trader.
  • Spend time with your people – You’re the mayor of WastelandVille, and your citizens like it when you’re around.

How to get maximum happiness in settlement

Getting maximum happiness in a settlement is a hell of an undertaking. It’s also quite different from having a generally happy population, and requires a different approach from the get-go. You won’t be able to keep it at maximum while also doing other things, so there’s not much point in doing it, apart from the trophy. If that’s what you’re looking for, check out our guide on how to unlock Benevolent Leader achievement.

For some reason when I check my settlement at Finch Farm on my map it says I have 44 settlers, 0 water, 0 beds, 0 power, and 18 Defense. Yet, when I go there I have 22 Settlers, 23 beds, 26 water, 10 power, and over 100 defense. This isn’t the only time this anomaly occurs where the info on my Pip Boy doesn’t match actual stats of the settlement but it’s the most drastic. I’m just wondering, has anyone else experienced this glitch or issues?

OK. In The Slog I have got 22 settlers, 40 food, 28 water, 106 power, 171 defence, 23 beds. I have blocked off the old beds under the shower so nobody gets wet. As a lot of my settlers are now provisioners I can’t allocate everyone a bed individually – I have allocated all I can individually – but the trader stalls are all emporiums, the settlers have baths, plenty of decorations etc. However, whereas nearly all of my other settlements are 80%+ I can’t get the Slog above 74% no matter how I try. Am I missing something?

I think it’s an urban legend that TVs and Radios make your happiness go down in Fallout 4. I earned the Benevolent Leader award while using TVs and Radios. Moreover, I earned the award at a settlement with only 6 settlers. Follow the happiness tips here. Food, water, beds, employment, defense, decorations, shops all add to happiness. Lastly, you must get your settlement size (top-right corner) large enough, so that it turns yellow.

I don’t understand. Why would the TV and Radio make the happiness go down? Please explain.

It doesn’t say that it says to increase happiness you can Invest in leisure in the form of TVs and radios for every house.

If you got to your pip boy, zoom out as far as you can, go to the top right (the most you can and still zoomed out). It is basically in the middle of your map.
You will be able to see a big road going from top to bottom, go to the middle of it in the top right not zoomed in section of the map. Go down just a little and you will find it.
      Good Luck
