Quake Champions have been busy lately, introducing new Champions and juggling the appearance (and a tournament) at QuakeCon as well as the closed beta. The next Champion in line is an old familiar, the Lone Marine.
For those who remember id Software’s history, the fact that the new character, the Ranger, is a “slipgate marine” will not go unnoticed. The marine behind the gun of the original Quake is back!
Two decades ago, a lone Marine stepped through the Slipgate and into nightmare. He cut through countless horrors to find four eldritch Runes, then laid waste to the abomination known as Shub-Niggurath.Trapped in these realms ever since, he has survived using the power of the Dire Orb seized from within the hot gore of the All-Mother.Time and delirium have eroded his resolve and even his name, but a worn family photograph tucked away in his armor serves as a scrap of hope and sanity.
The Ranger’s abilities include the Dire Orb and Son of a Gun. The former is an active ability, something little he picked up from the friendly Witch Goddess Shub-Niggurath at the end of Quake. The ancient artifact will damage opponents when thrown if it touches them and finally explode, however, the ranger can use it to teleport to that exact location before it does, which is pretty nifty. The latter ability is a passive one and it gives the ranger a 25% discount on any self-damage made.
So far we have seen quite a list of Champions in Quake. There is the Anarky, the transhuman punk, and Nyx, the fathom agent. Then Clutch, the automaton, Slash, the roller queen, Scalebearer, the galactic warlord, and Galena, who is an unholy paladin. A happy team featuring all sorts of talents!
