Valheim Fire Indoors – How to Light Fire in House & Place Fire Inside

To light a fire indoors in Valheim and place a fire inside your house, you can just place it down as you would anywhere else. However, there are several points that you have to keep in mind to make it work. This goes for all types of indoor fires you can make – campfire, bonfire, and hearth. Torches are a whole different breed, as we explain in our Valheim torch guide.

The first thing that you have to know is that you can only place a fire on either dirt or stone. No building a fire inside in Valheim on wood floors. You have to either have a stone floor (more on that in a bit), or cut a hole in your floor and then light the fire on the dirt below. That said, once you make the campfire, you can build the wood floor back underneath. That may be a bug, so I wouldn’t recommend doing it.

Another thing to keep track of when it comes to placing a fire indoors in Valheim is smoke buildup. At the very least, you need a hole in the roof for the smoke to escape. However, to protect it from the rain, you can build a piece of roof over it that’s jutting out upwards. Or, you can leave a hole in the wall, like a window, and then build a piece of roof over it to direct the smoke outwards.

One last point about lighting a Valeim fire in the house: you can make use of it in any direction. What I mean by that is that the fire has a sphere of effect, not a circle. You could ostensibly build a fire below you and sleep above it; as long as you’re within the sphere, you’ll get all the bonuses it gives. More info on that in our Valheim Bed Needs Fire guide.

How to Build & Place Fire Inside House on Second Floor in Valheim

To build and place a fire inside your Valheim house on the second floor, you need to have stone flooring up there. As we’ve already stated, you can’t place any kind of fire indoors in Valheim on a wood floor. Makes sense, considering that in real life that would set the planks below on fire, and eventually, your whole house would be ablaze.

If you have a stone floor, however, you can have a fire inside on the second floor. Mind you, to craft a stone floor, you need to have a Stonecutter tool first. For that, you need 10 Wood, 2 Iron, and 4 Stone; the recipe unlocks after you discover Iron. Also, keep in mind that you have to have a workbench nearby to craft stone walls and floors. If you know of any other way to put a fire indoors on the second floor, let me know in the comments, because I think this is the only way.
