Destiny 2 Clans, Guided Games & Matchmaking Explained

The social component of Destiny 2 is going to be better than in was in the first game, if the developers are to be trusted. They’ve decided to make clans more useful, add a system to help you find likeminded people for co-op and improve matchmaking altogether. It all sounds great on paper, but we’ll have to wait and see how it turns out.

Destiny 2 Clans

The developers at Bungie believe Destiny is at its best when played with other people. The game allows you to tackle challenges on your own, but everything is better (and easier) with a fireteam. People have been having problems finding parties for Nightfall strikes and raids in the first game for a long time, and the improved clans feature should help with that. It won’t be just a “second friends list”, according to Luke Smith, game director at Bungie.

Clans are groups you join to play the game together. When perusing the clan directory, you’ll be able to see the name, description and banner of each clan. This will allow you to get a feel for each guild before you try to join. Once you join, you’ll be able to see which of your clanmates are online, and organize activities with them. There will be clan progression and rewards, although they haven’t said anything specific about them.

Destiny 2 Guided Games

The guided games system will allow solo players to find groups that are ready to play, but are missing the last member. Here’s how project lead Mark Noseworthy describes it:

Imagine you had five people who wanted to play, but they’re missing a sixth person. Then you have a solo player who’s never played raids before, and they’re like “I just wanna see what this is like”. We’ll match the group and the solo player together.

So basically, it’s regular matchmaking. The kind you’d expect any half-decent multiplayer game to have. Yet some fail to get it right. Hopefully Destiny 2 won’t be one of them.
