Your article says “finding otis miller’s revolver REQUIRES you to find the torn treasure map pieces” i can confirm that the treasure map is not needed to get the revolver. I was in the epilogue playing as John Marston and I found otis miller’s revolver BEFORE ever finding any of the treasure map pieces. As long as the player has played red dead redemption 1 they would and should know where rattlesnake hollow is since it is a location from the first game. I found the gun first before the map because i wanted to see what the new versions of the old map looked like and sure enough came across the gun by accident before i even knew about the map leading to it.
