Destiny 2 Forsaken First Mission Toys With Player Expectations

The first mission in the Destiny 2 Forsaken expansion uses the fact that they’ve revealed the big twist ahead of time. It does everything it can to remind you of all the reasons why you love Cayde. They even give him several narrow misses with death. And, all the while, you know what’s going to happen, and all you can do is wait.

The launch of Destiny 2 Forsaken is now mere hours away. You can just feel the anticipation in the air. To add more fuel to the fire, several outlets have released gameplay videos of the first fifteen or so minutes from the first mission. And, honestly, now I can see why they revealed Cayde’s death so early on. I thought it was weird when that bomb dropped; I figured that kind of twist should be saved. However, as it turns out, they milk the fact that you know that Cayde’s gonna die at any second for everything it’s worth. It’s actually kinda clever.

In fact, the first mission has you and Cayde trying to quell a prison riot at The Reef. It’s a pretty standard shooty-shooty Destiny affair, that normally wouldn’t be remarkable in any way. What they do, however, is have Cayde constantly wisecrack and call you buddy. If you’ve never particularly cared for the Exo, this missions does its darnedest to remind you why he’s so cool. Meanwhile, you just know that the other shoe is going to drop at any second. Not only that, but they pepper in several moments where it seems that Cayde is going to bite it. He makes it out just barely every time, because it’s Cayde! He always makes it! He’s always fine!

Except, of course, you know that he’s not gonna be fine. This turns a run-of-the-mill mission into a tense, emotional roller-coaster. I have to commend Bungie on the design here. It does taste of emotional manipulation a little bit, but it does its job pretty well. I hope the rest of the Forsaken expansion works just as well.
