Rock carvings are a kind of collectible in Red Dead Redemption 2. They’re reliefs carved into rocks all over the map. There are various images, and you’ll have to find all ten of them to complete the Geology for Beginners side mission. After you’ve found all ten, you’ll have to send their coordinates to the quest giver, and you’ll get them to count towards your completion. If you get stuck at any point, our Red Dead Redemption 2 rock carving locations guide will help you.
Where to find rock carvings in Red Dead Redemption 2?
All of the carvings are located in the north half of the map. In order to start the quest, you’ll have to talk to the stranger northwest of Strawberry. He’ll ask you to find the carvings and mail him the coordinates – you can either mail him one by one, or figure out where they all are, then send them in bulk. Here’s where you can find the carvings:
Geology for Beginners bug – stuck after sending coordinates
You might think you’re stuck after you’ve sent all the coordinates to Francis Sinclair, but it’s just the way the game is scripted. You’ll have to wait for two in-game days to pass before you get his reply. Go to the post office to check it out. In it, you’ll get your rewards and an invitation to see him at his cabin. If the marker for his cottage doesn’t show up, wait a few more hours (go to sleep at your camp or do something else to pass the time). Once you get there, you’re in for a startling revelation which we won’t spoil.
Rock carvings not counting towards completion
Another thing that might look like a bug at first is the fact that the rock carvings won’t count towards your completion at first. It seems like an obvious error on the developers’ part, but it’s actually just a weird decision. Your completion percentage will be bumped up only after you’ve completed the Geology for Beginners quest, so don’t sweat it – just wait for that letter and finish the mission.
