Red Dead Redemption 2 Raccoon Mountain Hat – How to Get from Jon
Raccoon Mountain Hat in RDR2 is a hat you can get from the stranger in Valentine Saloon. The stranger, called Jon, only appears in Valentine in a specific time window, and even then, you shouldn’t just attack him out of the blue. Fortunately, there is a way to annoy him enough to swing at you, and get his raccoon hat in Red Dead Redemption 2. How to Get Raccoon Hat in RDR2 in Valentine?
To get the Raccoon Hat in Red Dead Redemption 2 in Valentine, you first have to find the stranger called Jon. He hangs out in the Valentine saloon (Smithfields), starting Chapter 2. The raccoon hat stranger only appears between 12 PM and 6 AM. So, make sure you enter the saloon in that window, and you’ll see Jon sitting at the table and drinking. Depending on when you enter the saloon, he’ll be at some point of his drunken rant.
To actually get the hat, you just have to stand close to him as he keeps talking about how everyone is useless. He gets progressively angrier as he goes. At some point, he’s gonna get up and take a swing at you. Since he attacked you, you won’t have trouble with the law if you fight back. So, that’s exactly what you should do. Beat him into a mushy pulp until he stays down. Then, simply pick up the raccoon hat off the ground. You can also loot him for other valuables. Now, the raccoon hat doesn’t glow, so we’re not sure if you get to keep it in your inventory (for more info on that, check out our How To Keep Stolen Hats guide).

Okay, so before, Jon’s special Raccoon Hat could be stolen but it couldn’t be stored in your Hat Inventory. There have been videos showing it on YouTube of players stealing his hat but couldn’t hold onto it. I tried my hand at this and managed to knock out the guy when I first started playing the game (I got into the game late because I didn’t own an XB1 until a month ago): couldn’t keep the hat as “stolen”.
Then about a week ago getting back into the game to resume playing, I had to install an update for RDR 2. As of this post, three days ago and half-way into Chapter Three, I attempted to get the raccoon hat again. Knocked Jon out again, but THIS TIME, I got a notification telling me that I had found a special hat. Now it’s in my Hat Inventory under the “Stolen” category.
I don’t know if this was true BEFORE the recent RDR 2 update, but for me, that’s how I got to keep hold of Jon’s hat in my inventory.
You do keep the hat. When you’re at your wardrobe go to the hats section and notice that there are some tabs at the top of the page. You have “hats owned”, “hats crafted”, and “hats stolen”. Jon’s hat is kept under hats stolen. You can select it to be placed on your horse to always have it available. Jon will regenerate in the saloon without his hat later in the game, so I always wear it in to taunt him, and fight him yet again. Makes my day
I’ve played through several times but this one I was saving for John in epilogue so I never messed with Jon the trapper. Now he is not showing up at all. any idea why?
Well it showed me the special hat popup when I grabbed it and stored it on my horse, here’s hoping it won’t get lost
Whenever i pick up the raccoon hat it wont show any popup or show up in my hats.
That’s because it’s not a hat you can keep. Way too many articles like this claiming sh*t that either doesn’t matter or doesn’t work. If you want this hat, you can craft at the trapper.
Not true, I’ve played through twice and got to keep it on my horse both times throughout the whole game and wear it whenever I wanted
Yea you’re 100% incorrect bro.. I’ve played through twice on ps4 and once on PC and I’ve kept it every time but once because I failed to grab it before getting killed by a 2nd fighter
You are in the epilogue rj and its not your fault if you didn’t know it is only available from chapter 2 through 6
Me and Jon got in a scuffle last night…. knocked his hat off but the filth got to me first and locked me away before I could grabs it …… I’m yet to steal jons hat or find him again?

Jon donated his hat to me after a brief disagreement, it’s been a firm favourite for me. However, just last night whilst out searching the mountains for a ne’er do well, I was jumped by a cougar. After the inevitable skinning of the mangy cat, I went back to collect me treasured hat, only to find it was ruined! I couldn’t pick it up again, it looked burned. Has anyone else experienced this?
Now I’m going to have to go Legendary raccoon hunting.
You can craft one its a part of one of the legendary animal outfit sets. so if it isnt sticking thats why

Its part of the legendary buck set as the hat, it just doesnt have an actual legendary raccoon as its requirement
