The Last of Us, Brokeback Mountain composer to work on Red Dead Redemption 2

If there ever was a more suitable speculation on who is composing the soundtrack for Red Dead Redemption 2, we are unaware. Gustavo Santaollala sounds like someone who fits the game perfectly, and the fans agree.

Santaollala is no stranger to game OSTs, with his stellar work on The Last of Us and its upcoming sequel. His movie credentials include titles such as Babel and Brokeback Mountain. So, cowboy themes – check, third person cinematic adventure games – check. However, this is not all there is to it. Fans have also noticed that his Apertura composition (see below), made for the Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack is very similar to the music that could be heard in the Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer (above). Give it a listen and see what your ears tell you.

Red Dead Redemption has been in the news recently when a group of modders wanted to recreate its map in GTA V. It seemed appropriate, having in mind that the game never made it to PC, however, they were contacted by Take-Two Interactive or Rockstar Games (it remains unclear) and gently told to stop what they were doing. The project was stopped, but it clearly shows the desire of the PC fans for a Red Dead Redemption game.

Currently there is no clear release date for Red Dead Redemption 2, apart from the recent leak from a Polish online seller. It does, however, fit the general time that Rockstar set for Red Dead Redemption 2, which was “fall 2017”. There is still no real info on the characters, and it is unclear whether they will take on the GTA V approach with 3 different characters. Also, the separate multiplayer component has been making a killing for Rockstar financially, and it is expected to appear in their Wild West adventure as well.
